Schoolboys 'lock themselves in Sainsbury's and ransack £300-worth of food and drink'

Two schoolboys reportedly ransacked a Sainsbury's for food and alcohol after being locked in the supermarket overnight.

The 12 and 13-year-olds allegedly hid in the East Kilbride store before it was closed before helping themselves to items on the shelves, running up a £300 bill.

The pair were reportedly discovered by workers starting their shift at 2am, according to the East Kilbride News.

Police said they were investigating a possible theft at the store after a £35 camera and two memory cards went missing in the wake of the incident.

"At around 2am two boys aged 12 to 13 were found with items within Sainsbury’s Kingsgate," a police spokesperson said.

“Parents were called and the children were picked up and are safe and well.

“Following further enquiries three items have been reported stolen. Enquiries are ongoing with Sainsbury’s.”

A source told the East Kilbride News the boys spent four hours roaming the aisles of the store before stowing themselves away in the clothing department until the shop was closed.

Security at the store will reportedly be increased following the incident.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "We can confirm there was an incident at our East Kilbride store and we’re supporting the police with their investigation."
