Football fans have travelled far and wide to support their national teams.

And when the Euro 2024 tournament kicked off on Friday, many Scots had made the journey to Germany to watch the boys in action. Finding a place to stay can be tricky when there are scores of spectators around.

So as a result, many turn to online sites to find accommodation. This doesn't always go to plan – and a group of friends shared their horror online after finding a hotel on Booking.com.

On X, a user called RoryB96 showcased the "absolute shambles of a situation" they were left in. As a result of the hotel not appearing as it did online, they were forced to walk the streets at night looking for an alternative.

He wrote: "Not normally one to post customer service complaints on Twitter but me and the boys are in Germany for @EURO2024 and wait till you see the absolute shambles of a situation @bookingcom put us in last night. So at around half past 8 yesterday we turned up at the original property we booked through @bookingcom and the place was an absolute mess.

"One of the beds was made out of cardboard and also held together by duct tape. The 2nd bed was a sofa bed that was broken and disgusting." After three hours on the phone, the boys were sent packing to a second property which seemed just as bad as the first. "Once we arrived, we were STUNNED by what we found.

"@bookingcom had sent us to a dungeon that must have been some sort of abandoned medical facility as there was hospital beds and industrial equipment lying around the entrance. We made our way into the property and we're greeted by more industrial equipment, exposed chemicals, exposed cables and exposed pipes and to top it all off an axe that looked like something out of a murder film. The whole place had the vibes of a human trafficking horror film.

"After all of the above within the first 6 feet of the property we made our way through the rest of the gaff and continued to find hazard after hazard including access to a generator room. We got to the other end of the property and there was a serious smell of damp."

To add insult to injury, the group shelled out £2,000 for their stay. They did manage to find other accommodation in Cologne for the remaining four days, but this didn't look very cushy either.

X commenters were equally horrified by the replacement. One wrote: "I'd have stayed in the first one after seeing the second place."

In response, a Booking.com spokesperson said: "This is not the experience we would want for anyone booking a stay on our platform and are in touch with the customer, so we can look into what happened and to make sure they are properly supported."
