Scotland vs Spain - LIVE!

Scotland earned their first win over Spain for 39 years with a stunning 2-0 victory at Hampden Park. Off to the ideal start in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign after beating Cyprus, Scotland faced a huge step up in opposition but responded with a sensational display that will live long in the memory of the Tartan Army.

Scott McTominay struck early in each half for his second brace in the space of three days, as Spain fell to defeat in a qualifying match for just the third time since 2006. That Scotland beat one of Europe’s heavyweights was impressive enough, though that they did so deservingly will please Steve Clarke even more.

His side are now two from two in their bid to qualify for the tournament in Germany, already five points ahead of Norway who were viewed as the main competition in Group A along with Spain for a top-two finish and with it automatic qualification to next summer’s main event.

Reaction from Ally McCoist

21:53 , Matt Verri

“I’m buzzing. That was nothing short of fantastic, and do you know what, we weren’t really in any danger.

“Hanley, Porteous, Tiernay, Hickey were fantastic, and McTominay with the two goals. Have I named all of them yet?”

The moment that sealed it...

THEY’VE DONE IT.

Sensational from Scotland, a famous win at Hampden. Fully deserved too.

McTominay with his second brace in the space of three days and Scotland have six points from six in Group A.

90+5 mins: The party can surely now start, despite the nervous faces in the stands.

Spain are about to fall to defeat in a qualifying match for just the third time since 2006. Remarkable.

21:38 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: More corners, more brilliant Scotland defending.

Gunn with another goal-kick to eat up a few more seconds, camera cuts to McGinn on the bench and he can’t stop smiling. Can’t blame him.

21:35 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added on!

Not really what Scotland wanted to hear. There’s still time for Spain...

21:33 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Pressure building, but Robertson gets back superbly and then the offside flag goes up anyway. This isn’t going to happen for Spain, the famous, famous win for Scotland is almost secured.

Williams tries to change that, stands a cross up and it’s headed away. Ferguson wins a free-kick, a few more seconds ticked away.

21:30 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Spanish corner taken short, Carvajal tries to slide a clever pass through but it’s straight out of play.

Gunn doing just about enough to make it look like he is still moving while not really moving. Strong effort with the goal-kick.

21:28 , Matt Verri

83 mins: That’s a ridiculous challenge from Aspas, lost his head there.

Not looking at the back, just launches himself at Porteous as the defender goes up to win a header. Yellow card.

21:25 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Scotland gettting deeper and deeper, everyone within 30 yards of Gunn. That helps though, Spain play it straight out of play.

Some very leggy players out their for the hosts, been an incredible effort. Hickey the latest to go down, looks like his night will be over.

21:23 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Rodri into the box, Cooper is there though to hammer it off him and out of play for a goal-kick.

Gunn can’t afford to take too long over this though, he’s been shown a yellow card for time-wasting.

Decent change for Spain to be able to make, Gavi is on. Ceballos the man making way.

21:19 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Tierney has gone down a couple of times, and he will now be replaced. Not exactly skipping off, despite encouragement from those in red.

He’s off for Cooper, with McClean replacing Christie.

21:17 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Hickey gives away the foul this time, chance for Spain to swing something in.

Hanley wins the initial header, falls for Williams and he completely does Porteous. Tierney across though, and Williams can only send the ball tamely into Gunn’s gloves.

21:14 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Hickey takes a blow to the side of his face, rolls back onto the pitch which goes down as well as you can imagine. Spanish players charge across to try and drag him off.

Cross eventually swung in from a corner, Rodri there at the back post but he’s unable to win the header.

21:12 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Scotland in full wind-up mode now and Spain are falling for it. Knocking the ball away and slowing things down at every opportunity, Carvajal shown a yellow card after he reacts.

Christie then wins a fairly cheap free-kick, that will tick away another minute.

21:10 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Here come Scotland again, still full of energy. Robertson’s cross charged down, rolls out for a corner.

Fired in low at the near post, not cleared and Tierney then goes down. Even he didn’t really have his heart in that appeal.

21:09 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Williams is looking a threat out wide, but he’s up against a fairly decent combination of Robertson and Tierney. Scotland will back themselves on that flank.

Clarke in deep conversation with his staff on the touchline, working out how they hold onto this lead.

21:06 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Long spell of Spanish possession, as Scotland drop right back in their shape.

Lovely ball out wide on the right, Williams gets to the byline and cuts it back. Aspas in the middle is picked out but fires over the bar.

21:03 , Matt Verri

58 mins: McGinn off the bar - Kepa was scrambling across and he’s very lucky!

And that’s as good as a goal. Space in behind, Gaya cuts it back and neither Aspas or Pino can get a shot away. Finally does fall for them, but Porteous does brilliantly to get his body in the way.

Hampden erupts!

21:02 , Matt Verri

21:01 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Spain rattled. Again. Porteous gives Pino a huge, the Spaniard doesn’t appreciate that at all and shoves him away.

And now Gaya gives away a completely needless free-kick. Another good position this for the hosts.

Spanish change - Merino off, Aspas on.

20:59 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Scotland flying into every challenge again now, roared on by the crowd who can barely believe what they’re seeing.

McTominay earned his place in the side after a brace last time out, and he’s at the double again here!

GOAL! Scotland 2-0 Spain | Scott McTominay 51'

20:56 , Matt Verri

HE’S DONE IT AGAIN!

WOW. Tierney charges down the left wing, brilliant run after initially winning the ball back.

All the way into the Spain box, his cutback is half-cleared but McTominay runs onto it and produces a brilliant finish.

20:54 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Once again Tierney goes down in the middle, cross is swung in to where he would have been too.

Headed out to Christie on the edge of the box, gets the first-time shot all wrong and it’s shanked miles wide.

20:53 , Matt Verri

49 mins: So poor from Gaya, flies across out wide and dives in as Christie gets his body across. Could see that coming a mile off.

Free-kick Scotland in a really dangerous position, Gaya fortunate to avoid a booking.

20:51 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Early pattern has been set. Scotland sitting deep, Rodri given space to try his luck from distance and he shoots straight at Gunn.

Already get the impression this is going to be a long 45 minutes for the hosts. Crowd not quite as involved now either with Porro replaced.

Back underway!

20:49 , Matt Verri

Carvajal and Williams on for Porro and Oyarzabal at the break. Hampden will be devastated to see the back of Porro.

There’s a change of referee too, due to a muscular injury. The main man is now fourth official, with the four official... the main main.

20:43 , Matt Verri

A reminder that Scotland have not beaten Spain since 1984. They are not used to being in this position!

The Spanish meanwhile have not lost a Euros qualifier for nine year - this is unfamiliar territory for them too.

A long, long way to go, but Scotland will be sensing a famous victory here.

How Scotland took an early lead...

20:38 , Matt Verri

HT: Scotland 1-0 Spain

20:33 , Matt Verri

That was a sensational 45 minutes.

Scotland took the early lead through McTominay, since then Spain have been on top but the hosts have held firm. Real edge to the game, particularly with the crowd so involved.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

20:32 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: HUGE CHANCE!

It should be 2-0. Ball is just lumped forward, Dykes too quick and too strong for Garcia and he’s in on goal.

Never really had it fully under control, lifts a finish over Kepa but over the bar.

20:31 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

Scotland have been pinned back for pretty much the last half an hour, but they’ve kept Spain at bay. So far.

20:30 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Hanley does catch Joselu this time, whistle goes and Spain will have a free-kick. Not really the team to lump it into the box though, so we’re back to the patient passing.

Merino then does cross it in, Joselu demanding a penalty as he furiously insists he was being held. Again he’s left disappointed.

20:27 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Hickey blocks Gaya’s cross, ball falls for McGinn who just stands there and waits for some contact. Ceballos generously provides it, free-kick Scotland.

Hosts have been so impressive so far, need to make it to half-time and get the reward they deserve. Could be a fair bit of added-time with all the rolling around we’ve had.

20:25 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Dear me, Joselu now down in the Scotland box as Hanley comes across. That might be the worst of the lot, hopeless dive.

He continues to roll around on the floor, eventually realises nobody is paying him any attention. VAR not interested either.

20:24 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Whatever this referee is being paid, it’s not enough. Bodies everywhere in the box, McGinn then goes down out wide before the ball is swung back in. Free-kick given to Spain as more red shirts hit the deck.

Tierney goes in strong on Porro, celebrated like a goal!

20:22 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Here we go, a rare Scotland attack as McTominay’s clever cross is turned behind. Came from Porro losing the ball which went down very well.

Tierney has gone down before the ball even comes in, chaos in the box. And again! Referee couldn’t care less.

Fired into the near post, cleared behind. We go again.

20:20 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Ball launched forward towards the Spanish box, Dykes wins the flick-on but he’s cleaned out Garcia in the process.

Elbow catches the defender, free-kick given and a yellow card for Dykes. That has done little to improve the move at Hampden.

20:18 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Martinez the latest Spanish player to go down, under pressure from McGinn. Not sure the Scotland fans have enough energy to be booing two players, they’re still giving Porro maximum attention.

Ceballos driving forward, ball through to Merino and it bounces up and hits his hand. Scotland will take their sweet time over this free-kick.

20:15 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Spain close again, as Rodri loses McTominay but sends the header over the bar. Another big chance.

Feels like Scotland haven’t had an attack for about 10 minutes, maybe more. Have to get out. Porro tries his luck from distance, tipped over the bar.

20:13 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Porro, believe it not, has survived and is back on the pitch. Deafening boos now greeting his every touch. Robertson shown a yellow card, despite no free-kick being given.

Getting very heated now, a scramble as players dive in eventually leads to a Spain corner.

20:12 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Hampden furious as Porro goes down holding his face.

That’s fairly embarrassing from the Tottenham man, got a slight shove from Robertson and has gone crashing down for no real reason.

Was an unnecessary bump from Robertson, but the reaction is so poor. VAR not interested.

20:09 , Matt Verri

23 mins: OFF THE BAR!

Scotland under real pressure now. Ball comes in again, Joselu has the beating of the Scottish defenders and this time he nods the header against the bar. So unlucky.

20:07 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Signs that Spain are starting to click into gear, Scotland struggling to get out of their own half now. Pinned right back.

That helps though, McGregor gets a foot in and the ball is played back to Gunn, who lumps it as far as he can up the pitch.

20:06 , Matt Verri

20 mins: Spain’s best moment of the match, though that’s a fairly low bar.

They’ve been relatively direct so far, this time the ball runs through to Gaya on the left. He clips a great cross into the box, Joselu gets up well but powers the header straight at Gunn.

20:03 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Dykes wins a cheap free-kick as he holds the ball up, just what Scotland need.

Spain unable to get any sort of rhythm going so far, they’ve been rattled by the hosts who look solid in their shape but dangerous on the counter. Good combination.

20:00 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Massive chance!

Scotland could, and probably should, be 2-0 up. McGinn with a lovely turn, picks out the pass and Christie can drive at the Spanish defence.

They keep backing off and backing off, Christie all the way to the edge of the box before he pokes an effort at goal. Just wide. Kepa was not getting there.

19:58 , Matt Verri

13 mins: That’s more like it from Spain.

Ceballos is dropping deeper and getting involved, and he is inches away from playing Oyarzabal clean through on goal. Just too much on the pass.

19:56 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Spain looking a bit ragged in the early stages here. Scotland much, much sharper, with the visitors losing the ball cheaply and giving away a number of cheap fouls.

Perfect gameplan so far from Steve Clarke’s side - now just the small matter of keeping it up for another 80 minutes.

19:54 , Matt Verri

9 mins: That slip from Porro was disastrous.

Robertson then so cool as he gets to the byline, and McTominay then gets his third goal of the international break.

Hampden was in fine voice before, but it’s on another level now!

GOAL! Scotland 1-0 Spain | Scott McTominay 7'

19:52 , Matt Verri

WELL THEN! LIFT OFF AT HAMPDEN!

A slip lets Robertson in, he cuts it back for McTominay and his finish takes a deflection on its way past Kepa. Stunning start for Scotland.

19:50 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Fair to say Scotland are not exactly in a rush to get the ball back in play when it does go out for a throw-in or goal-kick. Gunn making sure he puts it down on exactly the right blade of grass.

Ceballos looked to play a cute pass through the wall of blue shirts, Porteous reads it though.

19:47 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Scotland fans booing early Spanish possession. Would suggest they might get bored of that before Spain get bored of passing.

The hosts get their first chance to come forward, as the ball bobbles around. Space opens up for Dykes, who has an effort blocked.

KICK-OFF!

19:45 , Matt Verri

Up and running at Hampden. A landslide victory for Scotland in terms of the anthems.

19:41 , Matt Verri

Huge roar as the teams make their way out onto the pitch, brilliant atmosphere as you’d expect.

Time for the anthems and then we’ll be underway!

Pre-match thoughts from Clarke

19:39 , Matt Verri

Not long now...

19:36 , Matt Verri

Light show well underway at Hampden, as is Freed From Desire. All the essentials.

Kick-off coming up very shortly, less than ten minutes now until we’re up and running in Glasgow.

Huge test for Scotland!

19:29 , Matt Verri

Luis de la Fuente: Scotland have evolved

19:24 , Matt Verri

“They’ve got a good team that has evolved over the years,” the Spain boss said. “From my experience, no game is an easy game. Any of the smaller nations – or so-called smaller nations – can pose a threat.

“At international level, all teams are going to give their all so we have to do our best in every game. We respect our opponents. We go into every game respecting our opponents.

“Scotland are a very intense team. They are very aggressive, very dynamic and can play with a high press.”

Dykes leads the line tonight...

19:19 , Matt Verri

Elsewhere in Group A...

19:11 , Matt Verri

Norway have been held to a 1-1 draw in their qualifying match with Georgia. That leaves them on one point from their opening two games, after losing to Spain in their first Group A game.

That’s all good news for Scotland, with Norway expected to be their main rivals for a top-two spot in the group. Martin Odegaard had a big, big chance to put Norway in front, but he couldn’t take it.

Reminder that the sides finishing first and second in the group will go straight through to Euro 2024.

Clarke: We have to be very positive with the ball

19:04 , Matt Verri

Steve Clarke has explained what Scotland need to do tonight - he wants them to be good with and without the ball. That would be helpful.

“In every game you have to be organised out of possession, even against Cyprus we knew that if they have a threat it was probably on the counter-attack so you have to be well balanced behind your attacks,” Clarke said in his pre-match press conference.

“You don’t want to over commit, certainly early in the game and against Spain you know that if you over commit you run the risk of being picked off. So we have to be good and patient without the ball but we also have to be very positive when we have the ball.

“We have to be ready to be out of possession a little bit more than we were at the weekend, where we dominated possession. It might be a little bit different in this game but it is important to stay patient and capitalise at the right moment.”

Rodri relishing battle against McTominay

18:57 , Matt Verri

Rodri has warned his Spain team-mates that they will be tested tonight at Hampden Park, as he looked forward to a midfield battle with Scott McTominay.

“I think they have very good players, big names and a good squad,” Rodri said.

“[Scotland are] one of the best teams in the group so it’s an important game. If we win then it’s six points against the two best teams.

“Scott, a big rival of course with the Man United derby. They are big players, as we have also. We don’t focus much on the players but more on the things they do collectively.”

18:52 , Matt Verri

Scotland may well fancy their chances tonight of causing Spain problems, with the visitors making so many changes.

Eight in all from Spain - Carvajal, Laporte, Olmo, Gavi and Morata among those dropping out. Certainly an interesting team selection.

Steve Clarke’s side have won their last four matches on home soil, but this is a big step up in opposition.

Changes from both sides

18:45 , Matt Verri

McTominay comes into the side after scoring a brace off the bench last time out, with Dykes leading the line in the absence of Dykes.

Otherwise it’s largely as expected, with Robertson and Hickey at wing-back and Tierney in the back three.

For Spain, Joselu starts up front as Morata, newly-appointed captain, drops to the bench.

Spain team news

18:37 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Kepa, Porro, Garcia, Martinez, Gaya, Rodri, Merino, Ceballos, Oyarzabal, Joselu, Pino.

Subs: Sanchez, Rayo, Nacho, Laporte, Morata, Ruiz, Gavi, Iglesias, Aspas, Williams, Carvajal, Zubimendi.

Scotland team news

18:33 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Gunn, Porteous, Hanley, Tierney, Hickey, McGregor, McTominay, McGinn, Robertson, Christie, Dykes.

Subs: Kelly, Clark, Patterson, Shankland, Hyam, Gilmour, Cooper, Armstrong, Ferguson, Brown, McLean, Jack.

Ominous stat

18:26 , Matt Verri

Spain are unbeaten in their last 19 European Championship qualifiers, a run that stretches back to a defeat to Slovakia in 2014.

Not sure Scotland will be discussing that record pre-match...

“We need to be positive"

18:19 , Matt Verri

Clarke: Pressure is not off

18:11 , Matt Verri

Scotland topped their Nations League group and so have guaranteed themselves at least a play-off tie to reach next summer’s Euros in Germany.

However, Steve Clarke has told his players to forget that and put their full focus on qualifying directly through Group A.

He said: “What playoff? We want to qualify direct. That’s my answer to the question. We do not speak about the playoff.

“I have not spoken to the players about the playoff. I just want to go through the group. That’s the mentality. So we have to go with that mentality. I know what you are saying, it gives you the ‘freedom’ to go and play because if you mess up, but there’s no point thinking about the playoff.

“It does not take any pressure off this game because we want to qualify out of the group stage.”

 (PA)
(PA)

And on the Spanish side...

18:04 , Matt Verri

A similar story for Spain too, winning 3-0 against Norway but that result wasn’t really secured until the final ten minutes.

Dani Olmo put them in front, before Joselu, Spain’s oldest debutant since 2006 at the age off 33, was introduced and scored twice in a minute. Not a bad way to get up and running for your country.

Last time out

17:56 , Matt Verri

It wasn’t always entirely convincing, but Scotland got the job done comfortably enough against Cyprus.

The match was still in the balance heading into the final five minutes or so, but Scott McTominay came off the bench to net a late brace and seal the three points.

At the rate Manchester United’s midfielders are falling at the moment, he’ll be a one-man midfield for Erik ten Hag’s side when he returns to his club...

Head-to-head record

17:49 , Matt Verri

The two last played each other when drawn in the same Euro 2012 qualifying group, with Spain winning both matches and ultimately going on to win the tournament. Scotland last beat Spain in 1984.

Scotland wins: 3

Draws: 4

Spain wins: 6

17:43 , Matt Verri

Spain appear almost certain to top the group, leaving Scotland to battle with Georgia, Norway and Cyprus for second place and with it a spot at next summer’s European Championship in Germany.

This then is almost a free hit for Scotland, with any sort of positive result a bonus, but they are unlikely to get it against a Spanish side that have not lost a Euros qualifier for nine years.

Spain to win, 3-1.

Spain team news

17:36 , Matt Verri

Spain did not appear to suffer any injury problems in their win over Norway, meaning they could name a very similar side.

33-year-old Joselu scored twice in a minute in that match after coming off the bench on his debut, but is expected to be among the substitutes again as new captain Alvaro Morata keeps his place.

Predicted Spain XI: Kepa; Carvajal, Nacho, Laporte, Balde; Fabian, Rodri, Merino; Olmo, Morata, Gavi.

Scotland team news

17:29 , Matt Verri

Che Adams will not be involved for Scotland after a calf injury picked up against Cyprus forced him to withdraw from the squad. Lawrence Shankland has been called up as a replacement, but QPR’s Lyndon Dykes should lead the line in his absence.

Anthony Ralston has also pulled out of the squad, though he was not involved against Cyprus. McTominay is pushing for a start after his goalscoring cameo.

Predicted Scotland XI: Gunn; Hickey, Porteous, Hanley, Tierney, Robertson; McGinn, McTominay, McGregor, Armstrong; Dykes.
