Scotland earned their first win over Spain for 39 years with a stunning 2-0 victory at Hampden Park. Off to the ideal start in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign after beating Cyprus, Scotland faced a huge step up in opposition but responded with a sensational display that will live long in the memory of the Tartan Army.

Scott McTominay struck early in each half for his second brace in the space of three days, as Spain fell to defeat in a qualifying match for just the third time since 2006. That Scotland beat one of Europe’s heavyweights was impressive enough, though that they did so deservingly will please Steve Clarke even more.

His side are now two from two in their bid to qualify for the tournament in Germany, already five points ahead of Norway who were viewed as the main competition in Group A along with Spain for a top-two finish and with it automatic qualification to next summer’s main event.

Norway have been held to a 1-1 draw in their qualifying match with Georgia. That leaves them on one point from their opening two games, after losing to Spain in their first Group A game.

That’s all good news for Scotland, with Norway expected to be their main rivals for a top-two spot in the group. Martin Odegaard had a big, big chance to put Norway in front, but he couldn’t take it.

Reminder that the sides finishing first and second in the group will go straight through to Euro 2024.

Clarke: We have to be very positive with the ball

Steve Clarke has explained what Scotland need to do tonight - he wants them to be good with and without the ball. That would be helpful.

“In every game you have to be organised out of possession, even against Cyprus we knew that if they have a threat it was probably on the counter-attack so you have to be well balanced behind your attacks,” Clarke said in his pre-match press conference.

“You don’t want to over commit, certainly early in the game and against Spain you know that if you over commit you run the risk of being picked off. So we have to be good and patient without the ball but we also have to be very positive when we have the ball.

“We have to be ready to be out of possession a little bit more than we were at the weekend, where we dominated possession. It might be a little bit different in this game but it is important to stay patient and capitalise at the right moment.”

Rodri relishing battle against McTominay

Rodri has warned his Spain team-mates that they will be tested tonight at Hampden Park, as he looked forward to a midfield battle with Scott McTominay.

“I think they have very good players, big names and a good squad,” Rodri said.

“[Scotland are] one of the best teams in the group so it’s an important game. If we win then it’s six points against the two best teams.

“Scott, a big rival of course with the Man United derby. They are big players, as we have also. We don’t focus much on the players but more on the things they do collectively.”

Scotland may well fancy their chances tonight of causing Spain problems, with the visitors making so many changes.

Eight in all from Spain - Carvajal, Laporte, Olmo, Gavi and Morata among those dropping out. Certainly an interesting team selection.

Scotland topped their Nations League group and so have guaranteed themselves at least a play-off tie to reach next summer’s Euros in Germany.

However, Steve Clarke has told his players to forget that and put their full focus on qualifying directly through Group A.

He said: “What playoff? We want to qualify direct. That’s my answer to the question. We do not speak about the playoff.

“I have not spoken to the players about the playoff. I just want to go through the group. That’s the mentality. So we have to go with that mentality. I know what you are saying, it gives you the ‘freedom’ to go and play because if you mess up, but there’s no point thinking about the playoff.

“It does not take any pressure off this game because we want to qualify out of the group stage.”

Dani Olmo put them in front, before Joselu, Spain’s oldest debutant since 2006 at the age off 33, was introduced and scored twice in a minute. Not a bad way to get up and running for your country.

The match was still in the balance heading into the final five minutes or so, but Scott McTominay came off the bench to net a late brace and seal the three points.

At the rate Manchester United’s midfielders are falling at the moment, he’ll be a one-man midfield for Erik ten Hag’s side when he returns to his club...
