Scotland's "most festive" cities have been named in new research.

As we approach the end of November, people across the country are getting into the Christmas spirit. With winter markets and light trails taking place all over Scotland, now is the perfect time to book a festive getaway.

New research conducted by train company LNER ranked 88 towns and cities across the UK based on their chance of a white Christmas, the number of carol events, Christmas light switch-on dates, popular Christmas-related search trends, and the duration of local Christmas markets. Coming in at number one on the roundup is Edinburgh.

According to the experts, Edinburgh has a 47 per cent chance of having a snowy Christmas. LNER also found that the Scottish capital hosts two Christmas carol events — Carols by Candlelight with The Robin Chapel Choir and Einaudi's Christmas Carols by Candlelight.

The city's world-famous Christmas market has also returned for another year, featuring stalls selling all kinds of treats and goods. Edinburgh is also hosting an ice rink, as well as a number of fairground rides for visitors to try out.

Meanwhile, following behind as the second "most festive" city in the UK is Aberdeen. According to LNER, the Granite City has the highest chance of a white Christmas in the UK — with more than a 50 per cent chance of snow.

Aberdeen will also be hosting a wide variety of family-friendly events this festive season, including its Community Christmas Fayre where children can visit Santa’s Grotto and receive a free gift. This year, the city has also introduced a new Christmas Light-Up Trail, running until December 31, while the Aberdeen Christmas Village, Curated in the Quad Market, and Christmas Parade all return as well.

Other cities named among the "most festive" in the UK are York and Birmingham, placing third and fourth respectively. Rounding out the top five is Chester.

Commercial Director at LNER David Flesher commented: "Christmas in the UK is a magical time, with every town and city showcasing its own unique blend of traditions, festive markets, and seasonal events. Whether you're drawn to twinkling Christmas lights, festive carol concerts, or the charm of local markets, there's something special in every corner of the country.

"Our research provides a helpful guide for those looking to make the most of the festive period, highlighting the best destinations to visit for a truly unforgettable Christmas experience. It's the perfect inspiration for anyone planning to explore the UK this winter."
