A pervert Scots football coach took his own life three days after he was jailed for abusing young players.

William Lothian died in his cell within HMP Edinburgh between May 13 and 14, 2021.

The 66-year-old was jailed for 45 months after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting several youngsters in the late 90s and early 2000s, targeting boys aged between 11 and 14.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry into the incident ruled that his death was unpreventable.

The determination said: "Mr Lothian's death did not result from an accident. There are no precautions which could reasonably have been taken that might realistically have resulted in Mr Lothian’s death being avoided.

"There were no defects in the system of working in place within HMP Edinburgh which contributed to Mr Lothian's death. There are no other facts relevant to the circumstances of Mr Lothian's death."

The disgraced coach invited players to stay over at his home in the city, where he showed them pornography and plied them with alcohol.

One victim was so petrified after Lothian pressed his penis against him in a bed that the child fled the property in the middle of the night, while the court heard he also targeted boys during training sessions.

Seven victims, now in their 30s, gave evidence against Lothian during a five day trial which saw him convicted by a jury of all 14 charges he faced.
