The third season of Scream has already been announced and everyone's been terrified about it and planning sofa hiding spots in preparation for the premiere.

However, it looks like MTV bosses could be taking the show in a completely different direction with plans for a reboot, rather than picking up where season two left off.

Instead of following the current set of characters, they're considering a complete overhaul with brand new characters and storylines, according to Deadline.

Not only are they looking for new actors, but they're now also looking to bring in a new showrunner to go with the new direction Scream will be taking.

Michael Gans and Richard Register have left the series, just a year after they replaced the horror show's original bosses Jill E Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia.

The series will be putting out just six episodes for the latest run, despite previous seasons airing between 10 and 13 episodes.

Viewers don't seem too impressed with the reboot news, as they REALLY want to find out exactly what season two's ending was all about. Now, they're worried that might not get answers when the show returns.

It's safe to say fans took Twitter to vent, and they're feeling "betrayed" by reports that MTV could be changing things up.

It's a horror so we guess bosses are just keeping fans on their toes, but we'll have to wait and see when the third season airs.

MTV's declined to comment on the reboot rumours, as have producers Dimension TV.
