From Town & Country

MOTHER…, a large sculptural artwork by Studio Morison, will be on display at Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire from 29 February. Exploring the links between the natural world and mental health, the artists Heather and Ivan Morison took inspiration from Richard Mabey’s book Nature Cure, in which the author recovers from depression through walking and writing about the eastern region’s unexplored landscapes.

Created specifically for this area of wild fenland, the sculpture references local building customs and materials – taking the form of the traditional hayricks that once dotted the countryside – with the walls and roof thatched from local straw.

Set in a remote location, the structure can be entered through three deep doorways around its perimeter, and has a high conical ceiling, offering quiet solace to those who might sit within it. As its title suggests, MOTHER… represents universal ideas of protection and nurturing.

Commissioned by the Wysing Arts Centre, the sculpture is the latest in the ‘New Geographies’ series, a National Lottery-funded project that has seen members of the public select some unexpected areas of eastern England for new art installations. Other nominated sites have included a prehistoric forest, the walls of the former Colchester Cavalry Barracks and an abandoned oil terminal on Canvey Island.

A series of events conceived by Studio Morison will also be held at the structure throughout spring this year. Working with a dynamic group of writers, performers and campaigners, the artists have created a programme that incorporates music, literature, readings, talks and performances to interact with their glorious sculpture.

‘MOTHER…’ is at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire from 29 February.
