Sea Otter Steals Surfer's Board in Santa Cruz, Refuses to Give It Back

A sea otter that managed to steal a surfer’s board in Santa Cruz, California, refused to give it back to him, video uploaded on September 14 shows.

Footage recorded by Chad Underhill-Meras captures the standoff between a sea otter and his friend Nick “Parts” Ericksen, after the animal hopped onto his board and refused to get off. Ericksen is seen splashing water at the animal, to little effect.

“The otter started gnawing and biting the board,” Underhill-Meras told Storyful. He added that the sea otter was possibly pregnant, based on its girth and territorial behavior.

The sea otter can be seen hopping into the water, but only to lunge at Ericksen. Eventually, another surfer helps retrieve the board, and while the sea otter chases after them for a while, it finally leaves them alone.

“Apparently, this otter has been having episodes like this all week, and tried to bite several other people the next day,” Underhill-Meras added. Credit: Chad Underhill-Meras via Storyful

- We were just talking about this.

- You got to be kidding me.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- Honor just took Parts's board. Are you kidding me? How's this going to work out?

- He was [INAUDIBLE] over here.

- Wow.

- No way. Dude, this is going to be--

- That's an epic [INAUDIBLE] right there.

- It ain't budging.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- Was it doing anything weird before this?

- Yeah, right over here. It came out [INAUDIBLE].

- The pregnant one.

- Evidently it's a pregnant female.

- Oh, shoot.

- [INAUDIBLE] that fish.

- Shut the [MUTED] up.

- Let's go pedal out and rescue [INAUDIBLE].

- Oh, I have to.

- Yeah, I don't know how we're going to work around this if it's not budging.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- [INAUDIBLE] get one of these stand up guys [INAUDIBLE].

- [INAUDIBLE], dude.

- Yeah, oh God.

- [INAUDIBLE] give birth right now.

- Oh my God [INAUDIBLE].

- There you go. Yeah, yeah, [INAUDIBLE].

- It's a hard deal because if he gets him off, it's going to try to attack him. And he's going to have to get on the board right away.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- That thing doesn't have a leash, does it?

- You filming this, Chad?

- Yeah.

- Everybody is. Are you kidding me?

- Uh-oh. This is interesting. It's a standoff.

- No, he's [INAUDIBLE] help him. He's got a pedal. He can shoo it off.

- We're going to go help him. Come on, boys. Come on. I got a soft board.

- The wave might him him out.

- [INAUDIBLE] that's not a surf board [INAUDIBLE].

- Not big enough.

- The [INAUDIBLE] like, wait a minute. What? [INAUDIBLE] Swim.

- [INAUDIBLE] very aggressive. Super aggressive. Typical shit.

- So what would you do [INAUDIBLE]?

- All right, [INAUDIBLE]

- [INAUDIBLE]

- He's got to slowly push the board in towards this way. If it's not trying to attack him when he's pushing the board at all, just get the board closer to here, yeah?

- OK, here we go. [INAUDIBLE]

- This is good. This is good. This is great.

- [INAUDIBLE] don't even see what's going on.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- What if he flipped him over [INAUDIBLE].

- Push him into the wave. [INAUDIBLE] to catch a wave. Oh, boy. Dude, oh.

- Grab the board, Quinn.

- Come on, Quinn.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- Yeah, there you go.

- Oh, [MUTED] it's following him.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- Nuh-uh.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- He's going under.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- He's just got to swim in and [INAUDIBLE] has to push the board in, so he doesn't get bit.

- Paddle.

- [INAUDIBLE]

- It is not over at all. He's coming in.

- Watch your [INAUDIBLE], Quinn.

- [INAUDIBLE] so bad. [INAUDIBLE] is the one that got her pregnant maybe.

- Come on, [INAUDIBLE]. You're almost home.

- This is like the surfing version of [INAUDIBLE].

- That was crazy, dude.

- I can't believe that just happened because we were just literally just talking about it because it happened a little incident over here [INAUDIBLE].
