Boy, 17, 'Critical' After Being Rescued From Sea Off Sunderland

A 17-year-old boy who was rescued from the sea off Sunderland is in a critical condition after being airlifted to hospital.

He was given CPR by rescue teams after being pulled from the water by an RNLI lifeboat team.

The teenager went missing after a dinghy capsized in Sunderland Harbour.

The coastguard said it received multiple 999 calls reporting four people in the water at around 3:20pm.

The vessel contained two 17-year-old boys and two 17-year-old girls.

Northumbria Police said the two boys were seen in the water at the mouth of the River Wear, close to the Old Pier at Sunderland Yacht Club.

It is thought the boys may have got into difficulty after leaving the dinghy to swim in the water.

The girls were rescued earlier, along with one of the boys. Police say they are in a stable condition.

The coastguard said: "The search at Sunderland has ended after a casualty was recovered from the water at 5.10pm by the Sunderland RNLI lifeboat after the police helicopter spotted something in the water.

"The casualty was transferred to hospital by ambulance."
