Missing Camber Sands Swimmer Is Found Safe

Fears that a swimmer had got into trouble off Camber Sands beach sparked a search and rescue operation - days after five men died there.

Three lifeboats, a rescue helicopter and police officers were all involved in the operation.

It was started following a call from a worker in the beach office just before 9.30am, who said a woman had entered the water 40 minutes earlier and had not returned.

However, the operation was called off around noon on Sunday after the swimmer
was found safe and well.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "There was major reason for concern as this is a
dangerous beach and lifeguards were not on yet on duty at the time the swimmer was missed.

"It's a great relief that this person has been found safe and well."

Five friends died at the beach on Wednesday, and relatives of some of the men criticised the lack of lifeguards at Camber.

As a result, authorities have deployed lifeguards on the normally unpatrolled seafront over the Bank Holiday weekend.
