Seaside Scottish town crowned top winter getaway destination - see full list

A picturesque Scottish seaside town has been named as a top holiday spot in the country this winter.

On Tuesday, Tripadvisor revealed its Winter Travel Index. The quarterly index shows the top trending travel destinations in the UK and across the world for the season ahead.

According to Tripadvisor, South Queensferry is the top travel spot in Scotland this winter. Also known as Queensferry, the coastal town is found just outside of Edinburgh.

Most notable for sitting in the shadow of the iconic Forth Bridges, South Queensferry features spectacular views out over the Forth of Firth. It is also home to a scenic harbour that once served as a bustling commercial port.

The town features a variety of popular restaurants and pubs where visitors can enjoy a cosy roast this winter. The Hawes Inn serves up a seasonal menu with views across to the Forth Rail Bridge, while Scotts Bar & Restaurant offers classic dishes in a modern and industrial interior.

South Queensferry also has a museum where visitors can learn about the town's fascinating maritime history. Other top attractions include the historic Hopetoun House and the nearby island of Inchcolm.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh has also been named as a top trending travel destinations in the country this winter by Tripadvisor. The Scottish capital hosts a world-famous Christmas market, while other top winter attractions in the city include a popular light trail at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the iconic Hogmanay Street Party.

Other Scottish places included on Tripadvisor's Winter Travel Index are Aberdeen and Inverness. Meanwhile, Borrowdale in the Lake District places first for the UK.

Globally, Agadir in Morocco was revealed as the top trending destination for Brits. Other spots across the globe included on the index are Tromso in Norway and Cap Estate in St. Lucia.

The Winter Travel Index also revealed that 95 per cent of people in the UK are planning to travel as much, if not more, this winter. According to Tripadvisor, around four in five are planning at least one or two trips over the next three months.
