Storm star Breanna Stewart to miss rest of regular season with left foot injury

Seattle Storm star Breanna Stewart won’t see the court again until the postseason, if she’s able to return at all.

Stewart, after suffering a left foot injury in their Tuesday game against the Washington Mystics, was ruled out for the rest of the regular season, the team announced on Friday afternoon. Stewart will be re-evaluated before the start of the postseason.

The news means that Stewart will miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks and then in next Friday’s regular-season finale against the Phoenix Mercury.

Seattle has already clinched a playoff berth, as it holds the third-best record in the league at 20-10 with just two games left. The playoffs are set to begin on Sept. 23, which gives Stewart nearly two full weeks to recover.

Stewart — who was the league MVP in 2019 and the WNBA Finals MVP last season — left Tuesday’s 105-71 win over Washington in the third quarter after injuring her foot and hobbling off the court. Stewart left for the locker rooms briefly, but returned to the bench to watch the rest of the win. She didn’t return and finished with nine points and two rebounds.

Stewart was averaging 20.7 points per game, the second-best in the league, and 9.9 rebounds per game, the third-best in the league, headed into Tuesday’s game.
