A secluded beauty spot two hours from London has been named the UK's best beach to visit in winter. Tucked away on the coast between Brighton and Eastbourne, it offers walkers incredible views across the English Channel.

But that's not all Cuckmere Haven offers, as it truly sets itself apart from better-known beaches situated nearby. The imposing Seven Sisters cliffs situated next to it play into this reputation, along with the pristine meanders of the Cuckmere River which meets the channel at the beach.

These features played a part in it topping the list of the BBC Countryfile Magazine’s entrants for England and featured in the UK’s top 30 spots. Introducing the list, Countryfile Magazine said certain beaches have a special allure during the colder months. "Often windblown and oozing with atmosphere, you may even find that you have the entire place to yourself," it added.

Among East Sussex folk Cuckmere Haven has long been a favourite among hikers and dog walkers. Many particularly enjoy the walk down from Seaford Head where you can enjoy the postcard-worthy view of the Coastguard Cottages in front of the chalky Seven Sisters.

BBC Countryfile Magazine described Cuckmere Haven as “spectacular” and “a must”. It said: “Brisk sea breezes refresh your mind, rippling dazzling-white chalk cliffs test your cardio fitness, and amazing beach and ocean vistas provide the ultimate setting for an open-air yoga session.

“Starting from Seaford train station, head east past the pebble beach, oxbow lakes and vibrant, brackish marshes of Cuckmere Haven beach (mouth of the River Cuckmere), and on to your first climb, Haven Brow. On a serene winter’s day, the views across the bay are spectacular.”

Visitors are reminded to stay away from the edge of the cliff and to check tide times before they head out.
