Second red alert flood warning issued in Gloucestershire - caravan parks at risk

Another Flood Warning has been issued in Gloucestershire by the Environment Agency following heavy rainfall associated with Storm Eowyn and more wet weather. A red alert warning had been issued for the River Severn at Severn Ham, Tewkesbury, yesterday evening and on Tuesday (January 28) a second was issued for the River Severn at Apperley and the Leigh, between Gloucester and Tewkesbury.

The Environment Agency said it expects river levels to remain high over the next few days: "River levels are rising at the Haw Bridge river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected on Tuesday overnight and into Wednesday morning.

"We expect flooding to affect Gabb Lane at Apperley and local caravan parks. Predicted Peak at Haw Bridge 4.6m to 4.8m on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are liaising with emergency services and Local Authorities. Please move possession and valuables off the ground or to safety."

Flood warning areas now include River Severn at Apperley and The Leigh including Deerhurst Walton and Prior's Norton; River Severn at Severn Ham, including Abbey Mill, Upper and Lower Lode and Shakespeare Court.

River levels

  • At 4.40pm, The River Severn level at Haw Bridge was 4.64 metres. Property flooding is possible when it goes above 4.70 metres.

  • At 4.40pm, the River Severn level at Mythe Bridge was 3.76 metres. Property flooding is possible when it goes above 3.60 metres.

  • At the same time, the River Avon level at Tewks. Upper Pound was 3.80 metres. Property flooding is possible when it goes above 3.60 metres.

In its latest weather forecast for Tewkesbury, the Met Office is not forecasting any rain in the Tewkesbury or Gloucester area. A number of roads remain closed due to flooding.

This Evening and Tonight: Remaining cloudy this evening with further showers, though showers easing to leave most parts dry overnight with clear spells. A patchy frost possible in rural spots with rain arriving in the far west by dawn. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Wednesday: Some rain may feed eastwards across southernmost parts of the region. Elsewhere it looks generally dry, with the north seeing the best of any brightness. A breeze developing again. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: Early frost and any fog clearing to leave a dry day on Thursday with sunny spells and light winds. Cloudier on Friday and Saturday with some patchy rain and fog.
