A section of the A1 has been closed in Northumberland this evening following a "serious collision", with emergency services attending the scene.

National Highways confirmed that the stretch from the B6525 near Scremerston and the B6353 near Fenwick had been closed just after 3pm on Friday. Drivers planning to travel through the affected area have been urged to find an alternative route and allow extra journey time, with the closure still in place as of 6pm.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it was in attendance at the incident, which it described as being north of Haggerston Castle. "Severe delays are expected, please avoid the area if possible," the fire service advised commuters on social media.

Northumbria Police were also on the scene, with a spokesperson confirming: "Shortly after 3.05pm today (Friday), we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 north of Haggerston in Northumberland.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the road is currently closed in both directions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes."

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that one person has been taken to hospital following the collision. A spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.07pm today (May 31) to reports of a serious road traffic collision on the A1 near Haggerston in Northumberland.

"We dispatched three paramedic ambulance crews, the air ambulance, a specialist rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader to the scene. One patient was taken to the hospital by ambulance."

It comes on one of the busiest days for North East roads amid two major events in Newcastle city centre, with the Lionesses playing at St James' Park and a Girls Aloud show at the Utilita Arena taking place simultaneously on Friday evening. Those travelling into the city for the events have been urged to plan their route and leave extra time for their journeys.

This is the second serious incident in the North East to have led to closures on the A1 today, with the road also having been closed in County Durham since the early hours of Friday in both directions from J62 A690, Carrville, to J63 A167, Chester-le-Street, due to a crash. The collision took place at around 3.30am, and the North East Ambulance Service confirmed that one person had been taken to hospital.
