A groundbreaking film shrouded in secrecy is set to make its UK debut in Plymouth. The Secret Marathon—a gripping documentary about Devon-born Rotarian Martin Parnell’s daring mission to support female runners in Afghanistan—was initially pulled due to security threats. Now, with the support of Rotary Clubs across Devon and Cornwall, the story will finally be shared with the public in a special premiere on Friday, March 7.

Rotary Clubs across Devon and Cornwall are inviting the public to the premiere of The Secret Marathon. The screening will take place as part of Rotary’s annual conference, themed Helping Young People Achieve Their Potential.

The film recounts the extraordinary story of Martin Parnell, a professional speaker, legendary ultra-distance runner, and philanthropist who has raised over $1 million to help young people through sport. Martin secretly entered Afghanistan to support young women in running a marathon—a bold act that led to the film’s initial cancellation due to threats against the featured runners. He will personally host the premiere, which will be followed by a Q&A session alongside James Bingham, founder of the Marathon of Afghanistan.

Inspired by the film’s powerful message, The Secret 3K—a global initiative encouraging participation in a 3km walk or run in solidarity with those who are not free to engage in sport—has gained momentum worldwide. Rotary will be hosting its own Secret 3K on Saturday, 8th March, starting from the Crowne Plaza Hotel and encompassing Plymouth Hoe and the waterfront. Led by Parnell himself, the event aims to be the largest of its kind.

Also taking place on Saturday is Rotary’s Youth Development Day, an event outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel featuring free activities for young people, families, and community leaders. Highlights include the ShelterBox Challenge, where youth teams will compete for cash prizes by navigating simulated disaster relief scenarios, as well as a climbing wall and laser shooting provided by the Army. Cornish Lithium is sponsoring the Youth Engagement Village, designed to foster networking between youth organisations, support groups, and potential employers.

Rotary District Governor Tony Williams of the Rotary Club of Redruth expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events, stating: “Regardless of a young person’s ability, they have potential. Our conference spotlights what has been achieved, what is being achieved, those who have benefited, and the remarkable individuals who have transformed lives both here and abroad. We are extremely fortunate to be premiering The Secret Marathon and hosting the hero behind it. We look forward to welcoming the public to our events.”
