A new 'secret fare' allows customers to save up to 50 per cent on the cost of an average advance single ticket price to London, a railway operator has said. The price is aimed at customers who have 'flexible schedules', bosses add.

Customers, for example, can get from Nottingham to London or from Derby to London for as little as £12. Meanwhile, people can travel between Sheffield and London from £16, as well as between Sheffield and Liverpool from just £4.

East Midlands Railway (EMR) says the scheme has been launched in partnership with Seatfrog, and offers 'a unique opportunity for those who are flexible with their travel times to secure the best possible fare'.

How does it work?

Customers can book their 'Secret Fare ticket' from when services open for reservation - which is usually around three months before and up until two days before the journey. They can use Seatfrog's app or head to the Secret Fare webpage.

Those travelling enter their chosen journey and travel date, and choose a time window (morning, afternoon or evening).

Seatfrog will email customers their discounted ticket with their booked time 24 hours before they depart. This way, they know when they will be travelling in plenty of time.
