Sectarian abuse hurled at SDLP councillor as youths remove election posters

Youths have shouted sectarian abuse at a local SDLP councillor after he confronted them while taking down election posters in South Belfast.

Councillor Donal Lyons approached the young males in the Rosetta area of the city and recorded a video saying he would report them to the PSNI if they did not drop the posters.

In the video, some of the young males are heard shouting sectarian abuse at the local representative, including ‘f***ing fenian rat’ and ‘all t**gs will be crucified’.

Lyons is a Belfast City councillor for the Balmoral area and married to SDLP candidate for Westminster, Claire Hanna.

Posting the video to X, formerly known as Twitter, Cllr Lyons said it was ‘desperately sad’ to see young people 'echo old prejuduces'.

Had a run in with a few young lads who taking down @ClaireHanna ’s posters the other night. You can see yourself in the video how it went,” he tweeted.

“It’s desperately sad to see younger ones echo the old prejudices. Politics needs to do better for them.”
