And amazing footage show several hundreds of thousands of drivers slowly making their way home on the penultimate day of the holiday.

Images of toll booths on the 1,412-mile long G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway show cars backed up on both sides.

Motorists were reportedly left suffering at least 10-hour delays.

The route serves as the main route for cross-country travellers in the populous eastern part of China, where most of the country’s population resides.

The scenes were also reportedly repeated on many roads across the country.

China’s National Tourism Administration confirmed this year’s Golden Week tourism figures showed an incredible 6.1% year-on-year increase.

And it meant record-breaking numbers of travellers on Chinese highways.

Tourist numbers were also reported to have exceeded those recorded during this year’s Chinese New Year travel season in February.
