Thomas Markle on Good Morning Britain: Twitter reacts to ‘lovely bloke's’ extraordinary interview

Meghan Markle's father has given an extraordinary tell-all interview touching on everything from Prince Harry's views on Donald Trump and Brexit to how his daughter cried when told he would not attend the Royal wedding.

The Duchess of Sussex's father gave the bombshell interview to ITV's Good Morning Britain on Monday, apologising for the staged paparazzi photos and revealing details of how Harry asked for permission to marry Meghan.

The interview prompted mixed reactions on Twitter with many people claiming that Thomas Markle came across as "a lovely bloke."

But others criticised him for not respecting Meghan’s privacy and branding the interview “awkward.”

In the interview with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, the Duchess of Sussex’s father revealed that his daughter cried when she was told he would not be attending the May 19 wedding and that he had discussed Brexit and Trump with Harry on the phone.

Valerie Hill wrote on Twitter: “Thomas Markle coming across as a decent genuine man on #GMB interview but wish Piers Morgan would stop trying to ‘trip him up’ on the political questioning.”

While Gail Harding said: “Well done to Thomas Markle – you are doing great – no more political questions Piers about the royals – he’s handled it well – leave it now! Let’s hope he gets a great trip to the UK soon.”

In the interview, Mr Markle said his daughter “had the sense” not to invite any of her family members after up to “60 Markles came out of the woodwork” asking for wedding invites.

He also said that he had apologised to his daughter and son-in-law for the staged paparazzi photos and that he wanted to "change his image" as he had been presented by the media as a "hermit."

Mr Markle also claimed that his son-in-law had told him to "give Donald Trump a chance" and that he was "open to the experiment" of Brexit when they spoke on the phone.

Many people criticised his decision to air his son-in-law's political views and brandished it "embarrassing".

While Marie Anthony wrote: "Very awkward live video interview with Thomas Markle, Piers Morgan and Susannah Reid. Poor bloke had to answer some stupid questions."

In the interview, Mr Markle refused to speculate on when the newlywed's plan to become parents but said his daughter had "always wanted children."

He joked: "I don't think the stork has hit the air yet but it will happen sooner or later."

In an emotional on-air message to the couple he said: "I send my love to both of them. I couldn’t be more proud of those two and I think they’ll do great.

"I couldn’t be more happy to have a new son-in-law, I love them both dearly."
