Selena Gomez is many things — a business owner, actress, and singer — but perhaps her most important role to date is being a mental health advocate. In an ongoing effort to destigmatize conversations around the, Selena sat down with Dr. Vivek Murthy on October 10 for World Mental Health Day. In the interview, which focused on the pandemic's negative impact on her depression, Selena— who opened up about her bipolar disorder last spring — got candid about the recent months and how she got through them.

"In the beginning I couldn't deal with it that well. I kind of went into a bit of a depression," the Rare Beauty owner said. Selena noted that she was used to living an extroverted lifestyle, and for once wasn't traveling or connecting with fans. “And then I started going into a place where I was really writing and being active. And then I guess it just forced me to have that time," she added.

Since then, Selena said she's been able to spend more time with the important people in her life than ever before. "I almost feel like I've become normalized in this situation that's not normal," she said.

In addition to being with family, Selena has taken to personal projects, like working on her cosmetics line. “And recently, I've been able to go to the studio. So I would say right now, I'm fully coming out again and I just think I had to handle it the way I needed to handle it, and got through it with the right people and doing the right things and doing the right steps to not make me go crazy," said Selena. One of those personal projects includes launching Rare Beauty's Rare Impact Fund, which is committed to raising $100 million for mental health services for underserved communities in the next ten years.

First, I need to say that I'm so glad Selena has found ways to cope and appreciate the incredible tips on dealing with chronic loneliness from Dr. Vivek Murthy, which you can see in the video here. Second, did Selena just hint to new music by sharing that she's been in the studio ? 👀.
