Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga and Nicole Kidman champion the little black dress at AMAs 2017

Last night some of the biggest names in the music industry gathered for the annual American Music Awards.

The star-studded event saw Selena Gomez make her long-awaited return to the stage, performing her new single Wolves for the first time since undergoing a kidney transplant earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Christina Aguilera paid an emotional tribute to Whitney Houston, performing her own rendition of the soundtrack from the film The Bodyguard 20 years after its release.

However, it was K-Pop band BTS who bought the house down with their first ever US TV performance.

In contrast to the show-stopping performances, celebs' outfits for the evening were all rather toned down, with the little black dress proving a firm favourite on the red carpet.

Selena Gomez lead the way, putting an edgy spin on the classic LBD via a star-embellished leather dress by Coach while sporting new blonde locks.

Lady Gaga also followed suit, choosing to honour late designer Azzedine Alaïa by wearing one of his designs.

Over the weekend she took to Instagram to express her special bond with the designer writing, "I’ll mourn forever the loss of my friend. A true genius in not only fashion but in his heart."

Nicole Kidman chose to pair her slinky asymmetrical black velvet dress by Olivier Theyskens with an unusual choice of footwear, opting for a pair of lace-up knee-high boots.

However, she wasn't the only one to be wearing the dress and shoe combination with Ciara sporting a similar get-up.

The singer donned a shiny crocodile print wrap dress by Alexandre Vauthier and matching knee-high boots.

Could this be a new (re-)trend alert? We think so.
