Newcastle United player ratings as Schar man of the match but fringe men blow chance

Newcastle United scraped into round four of the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon thanks to Fabian Schar's first half penalty.

This was far from a classic but it was enough to set up a tie against Chelsea in the next stage on a night in which the Magpies created 18 goal attempts. But the game should have been wrapped up long before the end as William Osula missed good chances and Miguel Almiron squandered other opportunities.

Here's how Newcastle stars rated overall:

Martin Dubravka 6

Barely tested before being nailed by a challenge from Omar Bugiel. He didn't continue after the break.

Tino Livramento 7

Always on the ball with 122 touches. Breezed through the game.

Emil Krafth 6

A steady enough shift. Won't worry the two Premier League starters at centre-back.

Fabian Schar 8

Hands down man of the match as he sprayed balls around for fun and scored the all important penalty. If only his team-mates had been as sharp.

Lloyd Kelly 7

Comfortable enough with five aerial wins.

Joelinton 7

Rolled his sleeves up and got on with the job.

Sean Longstaff 7

A busy enough display.

Joe Willock 7

Getting there in terms of fitness. A couple of good forward passes.

Miguel Almiron 5

Looked rusty. Missed good chances. Won the penalty.

Harvey Barnes 7

His sharpness looked to be shining through. One effort just wide. But came off at the break for Bruno.

William Osula 6

Looked confident on the ball but did not take his chances.
