Serena Williams hit the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night, and her beauty look included a surprisingly affordable find — at least by celebrity standards.

Williams shared a sneak peek of her Oscars glam squad in her Instagram Stories, plus a glimpse at some of the "hair, makeup and wigs," that helped create her head-turning red carpet look.

As an avid beauty fan myself, one product quickly stuck out among the dozens of products: Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara.

$36 at Sephora

The details

This $36 mascara is formulated to lift and curl lashes with up to 12 hours of staying power. Inspired by hair rollers, it uses a curved, fine-tipped brush that catches, lifts and curls even short and straight lashes.

The result is a wide-eyed look with defined and lengthened lashes.

What shoppers are saying

In addition to being a top choice among makeup artists and celebrities, shoppers have also raved about Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara. It's earned a 4.2-star rating from more than 6,000 customer reviews, as well as 192,000 "loves" from Sephora shoppers.

Shoppers have called it the "best mascara ever" — especially for those with straight lashes.

"I discovered this not long ago and I’m in love," reads one review. "I have straight lashes that won’t hold curl and this mascara makes my lashes stay curl all day. I love it."

"I have short, straight, sparse lashes. This formula not only feels non-existent on your lashes, it doesn't flake, dry out, or clump," added another. "It lifts, separates, curls and lengthens beautifully (to my taste). Very nice natural look."

Shoppers say that this mascara "really makes your lashes look a lot longer" and "gives so much volume." However, some reviewers found that the mascara smudged after just a few hours of wear.

"I really like this mascara and how it makes my lashes look long and lifted. The wand is one of the best Ive found for my shorter lashes but it transfers onto my eyelid a lot throughout the day. I really wish they had a waterproof or smudge proof version of this," shared one reviewer.

The verdict

When it comes to mascara, personal preference often plays a big role in whether you'll love or hate a particular formula. In the case of Benefit's Roller Lash, shoppers who enjoy a more natural, defined look are likely to enjoy this mascara.

Those who are after dramatic volume or intense curl may want to pass on this version, or at least try out the $19 mini version before shelling out $36 for the full-size product.
