Police are on the hunt for a cat poisoner who may have killed up to 18 cats in a tiny Cornish village.

Pet owners have been warned to be alert after a number of felines mysteriously died in the last three years in Beacon.

Officers investigating the crime say a poisoner may have deliberately given the cats antifreeze — and that the number of deaths could even be higher.

PCSO Andrew Richards said they could not rule out whether the deaths were all linked.

He said: “Vet tests determined all these cats died from ingesting antifreeze — but we do not know where the source of it is.

“At this stage we do not know if this is an accidental incident or deliberate but in the meantime we would ask for everyone in the area to check where they keep their antifreeze and make sure it is secure and out of the way of cats.

“People should check their cars for any leaks too.

“It is possible that people were simply unaware of the potential hazards to cats when they poured the antifreeze away.

“Similarly we cannot rule out that this was a deliberate act of cruelty and would ask anyone who has information to this effect to contact us immediately.

“Just a small amount can lead to kidney failure and death.”

Beacon suffered a spate of cat poisonings in 2015 when four owners believed their beloved cats were killed as a result of drinking milk laced with antifreeze.

The cause of all the deaths are currently under investigation.

Five months ago, Monument Vets, a practice in the area, said: “We are seeing possible poisonings in multiple cats in the Beacon area of Camborne/Redruth.

“Symptoms are consistent with antifreeze exposure. Sadly some cats have passed away with this and some are missing. Please share our current advice which is if you live in the Beacon area to keep your cats and dogs inside. We are reaching out to other practices and the police.”
