Seven conversations every Scouser has had with a taxi driver
There are very few things people from outside of Liverpool find more entertaining about Scousers than what we say and the way we say it. There are certain phrases all Scousers just seem to come out with, whether we even realise we’re doing it or not.
You’d be hard pressed to find anybody who knows this more than the city’s taxi drivers – subjected to small talk from Scousers heading into town or back home for a good portion of their day. Here’s a list of seven conversations every Scouser has definitely had with a taxi driver.
1. ‘Been busy?’
A classic. This one’s usually the first port of call in a silent cab. But there are really only so many new ways to answer this question for the tenth time today.

2. ‘Red or blue?’
Whether you’re into football or not, everybody’s got a preference. It’s the perfect opportunity to bond if you both support the same team or talk about the day's fixtures, but if not, you can agree to disagree (reluctantly).
3. ‘What time are you on till?’
Usually followed up with ‘God that’s late, not sure I could be doing with that.’
4. ‘What time did you start?’
Usually followed up with ‘God that’s early, I think I like my bed too much for that.’
5. ‘That shift sounds like hell – any nice holidays planned?’
Everyone deserves a well-earned break. It’s also a great excuse to talk about your latest sunny holiday.
6. ‘Do you like working for your company?’
This is where the interesting conversation gets going. They’ve usually got great gossip about working for one of the other firms in the past, and a story about why they moved on. It feels like you’re getting the inside scoop.
7. Is it busy in town tonight?
By this point you’re probably near your destination, looking out the window to see that it is in fact busy in town tonight.
