Seven cool things about Lamborghini’s new Urus SUV

This week saw the launch of Lamborghini's first SUV since production of the LM002 stopped back in 1992.

The Urus is a change of strategy for the Italian sports car manufacturer which has made its name with savage performance vehicles with ludicrous styling and a low-slung body.

So, we thought we'd take a closer look at the £131,000 super SUV and show you the coolest features of the new premium off-roader contender.

1. It looks insane

The designers of the Urus said that "the design for all modern Lamborghinis stemmed from the Countach," and we can totally see how. The angular roofline, pointy front end and boot crease lines are reminiscent of modern Lambos, and the Urus is certainly the SUV that stands out the most.It is the first Lamborghini with a turbocharged engine. We know that doesn't sound too groundbreaking - but for a company that built its name on naturally-aspirated V10 and V12 engines, this was a big moment. Those turbos are attached to a 4.0-litre V8 engine that produces 641bhp. Along with 850Nm of torque, the Urus accelerates from 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds and rockets to a top speed of 190mph - pretty impressive for a car that weighs over two tonnes.

2. The engine

3. More adjustable driving modes than ever before

The Urus has up to six driving modes for you to choose from - meaning it'll be easy to get the right one. With Strada (Road), Sport, Corsa (Track), Neve (Snow), Terra (Off-road) and Sabbia (Sand), you can be in control of how it drives. The Tamburo drive mode selection stalks in the central console were inspired by aircraft throttle controls – which is gives that dynamic feel. The extra Ego option allows you to choose settings for your liking, which can be saved in the system.

4. Four-wheel drive - and four-wheel steering

It has four-wheel steering, meaning that cornering will not be as big of an issue in a car that is quite large. It will ideally make the Urus nimble and agile through the corners, and much easier to turn through slower manoeuvres.

5. An interior to match the exterior

The dual interior touchscreen – that was first seen on the Audi A8 – is the centrepiece of the cockpit, and it works in tandem so you can control interior features and the infotainment system. You can type or write on the screen to get the destination on the sat-nav you want on the bottom screen, as well as change the temperature of the climate control. In fact, many of the buttons usually found in a central dash are taken away to streamline the look.

6. Rear passengers can get involved too

You can take out the rear bench if you want and replace it with sports seats, which is a dynamic change if you want it. It may not be the most comfort-orientated change, but it's aimed at involving the rear passengers in the drive, which can be quite interesting.

7. It's being built in a brand-new factory

Lamborghini built an entirely new factory building for the Urus, which uses the latest robotic manufacturing technology to work in tandem with the human workers on the floor. The area inside on offer means that as soon as the Urus goes into full production, there is enough space to expand.
