Several people were detained on June 4 as a pro-Beijing group held a market in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park, where an annual vigil to commemorate the Tiananmen Massacre was historically held, video shows.

At least ten people, including activists and a journalist, were detained by police in the area on Sunday and other areas of the park were closed “by the government ‘for maintenance’,” Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) reported.

The last official candlelight vigil for the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which was held in Victoria Park each June 4 for three decades, was held in 2019, according to reports.

The organizers of the vigil, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, disbanded following pressures from authorities in light of the National Security Law, HKFP reported in 2021. Credit: Rachel Cheung via Storyful
