Several injured in six-car smash on A19 which saw huge tailbacks and delays

Several people were injured and one person was taken to hospital after a six-car pile up on the A19.

Cleveland Police and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) rushed to the Northbound carriageway near Teesside Park following a six-car crash. Video from the scene shows huge tailbacks and blue flashing lights in the distance.

Teesside Live previously reported two lanes were closed alongside the A19 Northbound entry slip road. The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they treated several people at the scene and one person was taken to hospital.

A spokesperson said: "We were called to a six vehicle road traffic collision on the A19 close to Teesside Shopping Centre at 1pm this afternoon.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances, a clinical team leader and a duty officer. Four patients were treated and discharged at the scene and one patient was taken to North Tees Hospital."

Police also released a statement urging motorists to avoid the area, they said: "A multi-vehicle collision has taken place on the A19 northbound near the Acklam turn off (Thornaby). Emergency services are on scene. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes. Thank you for your patience."

Witnesses said there were miles of tailbacks and reported one police officer was standing at the Mandale Interchange blocking access to the A19.
