'Severe' Thunderstorms Down Trees, Cut Power in Western Michigan

Thunderstorms that moved through Grand Rapids, Michigan, and nearby areas on Wednesday, September 11, left a path of “significant damage,” the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

“Strong winds” tore the roof off an apartment building in northeast Grand Rapids, forcing the building to be evacuated, local media reported. Citing officials, local media said there were no injuries.

More than 23,000 customers were without power as of Thursday morning, with most outages concentrated in the Grand Rapids area, according to an outage map from power supplier Consumers Energy.

On Wednesday, the NWS reported storms with “a lot of hail” and a possible tornado in other areas of western Michigan.
