Sevilla head coach Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with cancer.

The Spanish side confirmed their head coach will undergo treatment for prostate cancer in a statement in which they wished Berizzo a “speedy recovery”.

Spanish media claim Berizzo told his players of his condition at half-time in their remarkable 3-3 draw against Liverpool, where an injury-time equaliser Guido Pizarro secured a point for the hosts, who had trailed 3-0 at the interval.

After the goal the Sevilla squad rushed over to the bench to celebrate with their manager.

Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega paid fulsome praise to his coach after the game, telling reporters: “We have to go out there with that attitude, for the fans that always back us and for the coach who has turned this around.

“He is the most important of all of us, he has on the right path and we are with him to the hilt.”
