Sex Education teases trouble for fan favourites Aimee and Maeve in season 2 first-look photos

Netflix has unveiled a set of first-look images teasing what's about to go down in the eagerly anticipated second season of comedy-drama Sex Education.

The show's official synopsis has teased what our favourite awkward characters will be getting up to this season – from Otis trying to master his newly discovered sexual urges to Maeve and Aimee's BFF relationship going from strength to strength – but now we have some new pictures to ease the wait until season 2 drops next year too.

The first still glimpses Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and best friend Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa) standing in the middle of a wooded area.

While Otis is wearing binoculars round his neck, which might suggest the duo are on some sort of school trip, their worried expressions prove that – regardless of what they've gone there to do – it hasn't been smooth sailing.

In another snap, Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) and Aimee Gibbs (Aimee Lou Wood) can be seen chatting to a policeman in an interrogation room.

Might it have something to do with what Otis and Eric look so concerned about, or will it be the fallout of Maeve taking the hit for the drugs found at the end of the first season? Fans will have to wait until next year to find out.

At least things look brighter for new friends Lily Iglehart (Tanya Reynolds) and Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison), who are pictured smiling away and eating lollipops at some kind of fun fair.

Elsewhere, Kedar Williams-Stirling's Jackson Marchetti leans up against the bonnet of his mothers' car in a fourth image, as this new season sees him struggling under the pressure from his parents to succeed, while a fifth offers fans another look at Otis's sex therapist mum Jean (Gillian Anderson).

Lastly, Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) can be seen sporting a buzzcut and standing next to an army officer after he was sent off to military school, leaving him still conflicted by his feelings for Eric following their hook-up in the season one finale.

Speaking about the new season earlier this year, creator Laurie Nunn hinted that the show could "go anywhere", while star Asa Butterfield teased a lot of mischief will be involved.

"Not long left before we wrap on Sex Education S2, the whole thing has FLOWN by," he wrote back in August. "Can't wait for you to see what mischief we got up to this time around."

Sex Education returns to Netflix next year.
