Sex Education's Simone Ashley has secured a lead role in season two of Bridgerton. The British actress will play the female lead opposite Jonathan Bailey.

The second series of the Shona Rhimes-produced Netflix show focuses on the pursuit of a suitable marriage for the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony (Bailey), as chronicled in the second book of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Filming will begin this spring in London.

Ashley will play his new love interest, Kate Sharma. Deadline describes the character as "a smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools — Anthony Bridgerton very much included". The actress is best known for playing Olivia Hanan in Sex Education, but was also seen in season three of Broadchurch.

Creator and show-runner Chris Van Dusen said last month on Today with Hoda & Jenna that the new series will feature a number of newcomers, including a new suitor for Anthony: "I think it’s going to be as sweeping and moving and as beautiful as viewers of the first season have come to expect from the show."

In January, Bridgerton became Netflix's most-watched show of all time. Within the first 28 days of its release, the Regency drama was viewed by 82 million households, far exceeding the 63 million that Netflix predicted.
