A campaign by a disgruntled male motorist has resulted in ‘discriminatory’ women only car parking spaces being scrapped.

The 30 bays were introduced in the 420-space car park in Bavaria after a woman was raped at the town centre site.

Dominik B. Bayer, 26, took the town hall of Eichstaett to court over the decision, arguing that he feels discriminated against as he cannot use one of the parking spaces himself.

Mr Bayer said: “I want to make a contribution to the equality of men and women and of course the third gender.”

He said that such parking spaces also discriminate against women as it implies that they are weak and in need of extra protection.

After a woman was raped in 2016, the town hall decided that they should improve the car park as they deemed many corners to be dangerous as they were too dark and out of sight.

They therefore decided to make some well-lit parking spaces at the entrance of the car park for women only.

The case did not come to a judgement in the Munich court as the plaintiff and the defendant reached a mutual agreement.

The Eichstaett city hall announced that they will paint over the signs of the women’s parking spaces and include the text that the space is just recommended for women and that also men can use the spot.

Eichstaett’s administrative director Hans Bittl said: “This is a victory for women’s parking spaces in Germany.”

Mr Bayer and Mr Bittl agreed that the traffic signs will be replaced by the end of February.
