There's still a few months before The 100 season five premieres in the US (on April 24, if you want to mark your diaries), but behind-the-scenes, the show is already working on the season finale – and it's shaping up nicely, thank you very much.

The latest to join in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi series is Shadowhunters actor and Degrassi: The Next Generation's Shannon Kook, who has been cast as a guest star in the finale.

While character details are being kept tightly under wraps for now, Deadline confirms that Kook will play a character called Lucas and it looks like he'll play an important role too as he's been signed with the option of playing a series regular in season six too.

Kook isn't the only new arrival to The 100 to come from Shadowhunters either, as last year the series recast new character Madi with actress Lola Flanery, who played the Seelie Queen (or one version of her) in the Freeform series.

Meanwhile, to keep the casting split fair, a former The 100 star has made the jump into Shadowhunters too, with Chai Hansen joining the Freeform series as fan favourite character Jordan Kyle too.

The 100 season five picks up six years after a second nuclear apocalypse destroyed the world, with showrunner Jason Rothenberg teasing the new series acts as a "reboot" for the show.

The time jump has also meant that The 100 fans will be seeing a whole host of new characters in season five, including a new villain in the form of William Miller as well as adrenaline junkie Zeke Shaw (played by Peaky Blinders star Jordan Bolger).

Alongside series regulars Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley, Christopher Larkin, Paige Turco, Lindsey Morgan and Marie Avgeropoulos, guest star Tasya Teles has also been promoted to series regular for the fifth season.

The 100 returns to The CW in the US on Tuesday, April 24. E4 airs the show in the UK.
