The star was sensationally sacked from his role as Tommy Duckworth in Coronation Street back in 2013, after footage of him rapping about rape and extreme violence caused public outrage. And hasn’t worked since.

Prior to the incident, Chris, 28, had boasted off a successful career, speaking to Ruth and Eamonn, Chris said: ‘[The impact is] massive, I have constantly worked since I was 15, started on Hollyoaks, then Dancing on Ice, Coronation Street, then this happened.’

‘It put my family through hell, my mum and my grandma, my dad, my girlfriend and I let a lot of people down including myself.’

‘I didn’t leave the house for a long time, I was really depressed and really ashamed and rightly so.’

Chris also recalled just how tough life became for him, he said: ‘I never kind of stopped working, this was all I’ve ever done, I was always an actor that’s all I know. So to have that taken away by something that I’ve brought on myself was an absolute killer.’

But after three years in the wilderness, old pal and former Hollyoaks co-star Gary Lucy encouraged him to take a role in the national theatre tour of The Full Monty, which kicks off in Bournemouth in September.

Chris plays one of the unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who turn to stripping to earn money alongside co-stars Louis Emerick, Andrew Dunn, Gary Lucy, Joe Absolom and Kai Owen.

Chris said the role ‘is a fresh start him’, before tweeting: ‘Also a massive thank you to everyone for your support and lovely tweets, it’s truly appreciated hopefully onwards and upwards now x.’ (Sic)

Chris, we can’t wait to see you flashing those abs on stage!
