Shane Richie has been giving EastEnders fans whiplash over the last week with a series of conflicting comments about his future on the show.

The actor has been missing from Albert Square ever since he and co-star Jessie Wallace got their own short-lived spin-off Kat & Alfie: Redwater, which concluded with both characters on the verge of death.

But Kat most definitely survived, and will so be reappearing in Walford soon. Richie's status on EastEnders has been unclear ever since he seemingly claimed to have turned down a comeback last week.

"I'm in a fortunate position where I can pick and choose what I want to do, and EastEnders at the moment, I said no to it," he told Liverpool radio station Radio City. "I just need to take a break from television and a little break away from showbiz.

"Trust me, it's not because I've got loads of money, because that is far from the truth. But I just need to pick and choose."

He later back-tracked, claiming that he would never turn down EastEnders. And now, the 53-year-old has told The Sun that he'd love to be back in the Square in the foreseeable future.

"I have no idea what's going on," he admitted. "But yeah, definitely."

Richie is busy at the moment promoting his latest music album A Country Soulover in the US, and will soon be appearing in the 10th anniversary series of Benidorm as well.

EastEnders continues on Monday (January 22) at 8pm on BBC One.
