The Shannara Chronicles has been axed after only two seasons – though fans should not completely despair.

The fantasy drama began life on MTV before moving to Spike for its second season, though it seems it hasn't worked out for a third.

The fantasy drama has now been cancelled, according to TV Guide, but hope has not completely died for a third season.

Deadline also reports that it's now being shopped around networks to find a new home, with its studio Sonar already beginning talks with prospective buyers.

Netflix already streams the show in the US, so that could be a potential home as could Amazon, which is already getting into the fantasy TV game with a Lord of the Rings series.

The Shannara Chronicles is based on the 26-book fantasy saga by Terry Brooks, and debuted on MTV in 2016.

It quickly became one of the most-watched shows on the network, before moving to another Viacom network, Spike, for season two. It has also been praised by fans for its racial and sexual diversity.

However, The Shannara Chronicles suffered a massive dip in ratings for its second outing, and its cancellation comes ahead of Spike's rebranding into the Paramount Network.

It probably doesn't help that the show has a big production, as it is filmed on location in New Zealand.

The Shannara Chronicles stars Austin Butle, Ivana Baquero, Manu Bennett, Aaron Jakubenko and Marcus Vanco.
