Shappi Khorsandi has said her experience of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! was “a bit sad”,

The stand-up comedian was the first campmate to be evicted from the ITV jungle reality show in 2017, in which she appeared alongside the likes of Boris Johnson’s father Stanley, footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy and Made In Chelsea’s Georgia “Toff” Toffolo, who won the series.

Khorsandi, 47, told Jay Rayner’s Out To Lunch podcast: “It was just all a bit sad, it felt like school again where, you know, I’m not one of the sporty ones.

“I’m not one of the pretty girls. And so I’m just a log. I might as well have been one of the logs for them.”

She went on: “I knew when I got in there that the only reason I can stay in the show is if I create some kind of drama. I had a mantra – I refuse to argue with anyone. Not even Rebekah Vardy when she was really mean to me.”

Khorsandi – who was born in Iran before her family sought asylum in Britain when she was a child – has appeared on TV shows including Have I Got News For You, QI, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Loose Women.

She said taking part in I’m A Celebrity “gave me such a deep and renewed love of stand-up comedy and the industry I work in” and “took away all of my career anxieties”.

Khorsandi explained: “Because it showed me that the other side was ghastly.

“You have to just basically sit there the whole time and go, ‘Is what it is, babe. At the end of the day…’ It’s all about being like all these sort of empty platitudes.”

After leaving the jungle in 2017 Khorsandi claimed former Conservative politician Stanley Johnson, 79, had voiced his opinions on immigration on the show, but that they had not been aired.
