'Shark Sighting' Sparks Fear in North Carolina Waters

Wilmington’s Swim the Loop swimming competition on November 10 was a little more eventful than usual this year because of what appeared to be a shark in the water.

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher spokeswoman Robin Nalepa said that it was most likely a sunfish, which are often mistaken for sharks due to their dorsal fin. Although the aquarium cannot say definitively if the creature was a sunfish or a shark, no swimmers were hurt and the race continued after the creature had not been spotted for a few minutes.
