Sharleen Spiteri admits she was disappointed to find out her daughter's modelling aspirations

Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri has revealed that she wasn’t that impressed when her 18-year-old daughter Misty revealed she wanted to be a model.

Speaking on White Wine Question Time, the front woman said her initial reaction was not that supportive.

“She started modelling, which was quite a moment for me as a mother - I literally went ‘You might as well be a hooker!’” she told host Kate Thornton.

While her daughter has been on the front cover of Pop magazine – and featured in shoots for top magazines such as Vogue and W, Spiteri was keen that her daughter realised that modelling couldn’t be her only option.

“It's not to say that she'll not do anything great, but what I said to her is have a plan - have a plan A, have a plan B, have a plan C.” she said.

She continued: “I was in Texas at Misty's age. I'd already written I Don't Want A Lover at that point.”

However, Spiteri, who releases a new album with Texas this month, says that since seeing her daughter at work, she’s actually quite proud of the teen.

“I had to go and take something to her on a set and I saw her in a situation from afar — she didn't know I was there — and she was so professional,” she revealed.

“I felt really proud. She's on time. She's never late. She's organised. I'm like, ‘OK, we'll give her a chance!'”

Spiteri said she has always encouraged her daughter, who she had with ex-partner Ashley Heath, to be polite and have manners as she was extremely conscious of the privileged upbringing she had.

“I think I'm really conscious of it, because she's grown up in a privileged lifestyle that that I never grew up in,” she told Thornton.

“I guess that little bit of me is slightly paranoid that I'm going to end up with some privileged little t***!”

Her daughter has recently completed her A-levels, but Spiteri said she could never really lecture her about her studies as she dropped out of school at just 15.

“I left school at 15 - I just never went back,” she exclaimed. “I was supposed to still do another half a year - and I never did. I was out working when I was Misty's age.”

However, she does worry that her daughter may have set her expectations a bit too high after the 18-year-old spotted her dream flat.

“I was like (laughs): ‘You think you're going to buy a house in London?’” she recalled.

“I swear to God, I love it! I'm like, ‘You know what, when you do, because I can just see your eyes – you’ve got that determination - I'll be like yay!’ because, you know, how do young people get on the property ladder nowadays?”
