This article contains spoilers for Sharp Objects season one episode two, which aired in the US last night (July 15).

Sharp Objects writer Gillian Flynn has revealed that she's always wanted to do a Woman in White spin-off.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about episode two of the Amy Adams-led Sharp Objects, in which the funeral of Natalie Keene brings together the people of Wind Gap, Flynn discussed incorporating the imagery of the Woman in White, the female equivalent of the horror myth Slender Man.

During the episode, a little boy tells Camille (Adams) that the 'Woman in White' took Natalie, but the police don't believe him – although Camille does.

"Getting to see the Woman in White finally in a flicker, which to me is so creepy, was an important moment," said Flynn. "The female mythology runs rampant all throughout Sharp Objects, mostly in the novel and, you'll see, in the TV show.

"That's kind of a first real flicker of that. That whole moment I've always found very creepy, to get to see that come to life."

She then revealed how the Woman in White is something she's always been interested in, and added that she almost ended up making a spin-off about her.

"I've always wanted to do a Woman in White spin-off - the original Slender Man sort of idea, how that came to be, what the origin story of the Woman in White was," she said.

"I actually sketched out a short story years ago when I was writing Sharp Objects. They always said, 'That story's been around for years. Don't pay attention.' I was like, 'Really?'

"Of course my weird little brain was like, 'It's been around for years? When did it come to be? Let's write this, too.' Because that has to be a story itself."

Sharp Objects continues next Sunday at 9/8c on HBO and is simulcast on Sky Atlantic from 2am on Mondays, with a repeat showing at 9pm. It is streaming weekly on NOW TV and is receiving rave reviews.
