A 24-year-old man from eastern India has sparked outrage after standing on top of a 120-year-old Galapagos tortoise, all in the name of internet fame.

Fazal Sharik was arrested for wildlife offences after he uploaded the pictures onto his Facebook page and shared them on Twitter.

The garage worker told police: ‘I just wanted to put it up on Facebook so I’d get lots of likes.’

If convicted, he will face up to six months in jail.

Galapagos giant tortoises like this one in the zoo in Hyderabad are the largest living species of tortoise on the planet and the 14th-heaviest living reptile.

Nehru Zoological Park curator Ramakrishna Rao said: ‘I am glad the police are making an example of him and I hope it will deter others. He did get a lot of attention, but I hope it is not the sort he wanted.

‘It is a privilege to be able to see these magnificent creatures close up. This sort of cruelty and stupidity cannot be tolerated."
