Shiloh Jolie’s Name Change Is Official
She hit a minor setback back in July.
Back in May, Shiloh Jolie filed to have her name changed—and now, People reports that the courts have granted the filing and she is legally free of her previous last name, Pitt. Her full name was Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt and the name change filing coincided with her 18th birthday. Alongside Shiloh, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt share five other kids: Maddox, 22; Zahara, 19; Pax, 20; Knox, 16; and Vivienne, 16.
Shiloh hit a minor speed bump in the legal proceedings back in July, when the courts found that she didn't complete her background check.
"Unfortunately, the court was unable to complete the background check ahead of today's hearing, so the hearing was rescheduled for August 19," Peter Levine, her lawyer, shared at the time in a statement. "Everyone undergoing a name-change request needs to have a background check conducted by the court clerk, and because of clerical error, Shiloh's hearing has been continued to a new date."
In addition to the background check, Shiloh had to print her intention to change her name in a newspaper. She opted to use the Los Angeles Times, announcing that she wished to use "Shiloh Jolie" as her legal name. In accordance with California laws, she had to run the information continuously for a full month before a judge could sign off on the request. That sort of thing goes in the legal notice section for fans wondering whether or not a celebrity child changing their name merits front-page news at the Times.
Back in May, sources close to Pitt shared that he knew what was happening and wasn't exactly happy about it. The divorce proceedings with Angelina are still making their way through the legal system as the actors' respective legal teams figure out what to do with Miraval, the wine company they once owned together.
“He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name," a source told People. "The reminders that he’s lost his children, is, of course, not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them."
