Winter is here! ‘Polar air mass’ brings snow and sub-zero temperatures to shivering Britain
Parts of Britain woke up to a blanket of snow on Friday, as the first harsh winter weather of the season struck.
Snow fell overnight across Scotland, Greater Manchester, Devon, Cornwall, west Wales and even as far south as Exeter as Britian was struck by a "polar air mass".
This meant a cold northwesterly wind blew across Britain from the Arctic Sea, causing temperatures to plummet below freezing and led the Met Office issued several severe weather warnings across the country.
The lowest temperatures recorded was -7.2C in Braemar, in the Scottish Highlands.
But it was not just the high grounds which were hit.
Elsewhere, commuters struggled to get to work as slow turned to icy slush and there were reports of cars being overturned.
