Shocked residents have told how they heard 'screams' after a man was stabbed in a car park by a masked gang.

One neighbour desperately held a tea towel to the bloody wound of the man who had been attacked by what another neighbour describes as a 'huge' Rambo-style knife.

Police raced to the scene along with emergency crews around 11.5pm on Monday, August 12.

The victim, a 36-year-old man, suffered a number of slash wounds and was rushed to hospital after ambushed by three balaclava clad men on Chamberlain Street in Tranmere. The suspects fled the scene, The ECHO reports.

One neighbour told that he heard a woman scream moments before he ran up his street to find a man bleeding. He said: "I rang the ambulance. I heard this scream looked down the road and there was this guy on the floor. I walked up Chamberlain Street and it looked like someone had been slashed with a knife. You could tell he had been sliced, I live in the building behind. It's right on my doorstep."

Another nearby resident recalled seeing three males ran from the scene as a woman screamed. He went to see what had happened and found himself in the middle of a crime scene. He recalled putting pressure on the man's stab wounds with a tea towel, while they waited for an ambulance.

He said: "I was just stood outside the flats and I heard screaming so I ran over and this guy had been cut up, it was on his back and on his head. It was bad but he was conscious, I think it must have been adrenaline. I was trying to help put pressure on his wounds, but he was shouting for people to get off him. He never lost consciousness.

"We were just standing next to the bins and we heard a woman scream - I think it was his girlfriend - we saw them [the suspects] run past us, it just looked like three ballied-up kids. I'd say about 18. They didn't even stop, they just ran past, and went straight down through the alley into the estate. I saw them put the knife away, it was like a Rambo-style knife. It was a huge, huge blade."

He added: "It's a strange world. I was just putting pressure on the wounds with a tea-towel. Goody was there first, he rang the ambulance. The guy seemed OK, we were saying just stay still. He got a jab on his side and his head, I think they got his knee cap too because he looked like he couldn't stand up, they have probably got him down and slashed him. His missus must be horrified, she was just there I think she was in shock - she didn't speak. It's not nice on your doorstep, but it happens more often than not, you would be shocked by how much it happens.

Another man, who did not want to be named, told the newspaper how he had known the victim most of his life, and had just been with him less than an hour before the attack. He said: "I can tell you everything about the lad, he is a good lad."
