Shocking moment van hits Jewish man in Stamford Hill 'hit-and-run'

This is the shocking moment a van ploughs into an elderly man crossing the road before the driver performs a screeching U-turn and flees the scene.

CCTV footage shows the victim, in his sixties, crossing at the busy junction in north London when he is knocked over by the oncoming white truck.

One witness said the collision was “so bad” the elderly man was “knocked unconscious” and left with head injuries.

In the footage the van makes a right turn into Stamford Hill before reversing until it is side-by-side with the prone victim.

But as horrified passers-by run to the man’s aid the van driver suddenly whips around the junction and speeds off the way they came.

A staff member at Dominos in Stamford Hill said: “The collision happened suddenly and it was so bad that the man’s head bashed against the road.

“I thought I could help him but he was knocked unconscious and everyone came to his help so I went to make sure I could get a description of the driver.

“The man in the truck reversed and saw what he did then did a U-turn in front of me before driving off.

“One of his side mirrors had fallen off and I think that’s what hit the man.”

Police and paramedics were called after the alleged hit-and-run at 11.35am on Saturday.

It is believed there was a green light signal for vehicles travelling on Clapton Common at the time of collision.

According to a Transport for London report published in 2016, the junction has “one of the highest collision rates in all of Hackney”.

During a consultation period around ways to improve the junction, Tfl received 730 responses with a call to make the junction “safer for pedestrians” and cyclists.

Despite the call from public to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, on the Tfl website it states that it “decided to no longer pursue making any changes to the junction”.

A Met police spokesman said officers were called to the scene at the junction of Clapton Common and Stanford Hill about 11.40am.

He said: “The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

“His injuries are not life changing or life threatening.

“No arrests have been made and police are investigating.”

Anyone with information should call 101.
