Shoppers enjoy festive display on Oxford Street as Christmas lights switched on

Christmas has officially moved one step closer as the lights in London's Oxford Street were turned on ahead of the festive period.

Shoppers were treated to sets from some top musical talent as in-store performances marked 60 years of Christmas lights displays in the shopping mecca.

Retailers expect 42 million shoppers to spend £2.5 billion in central London over the course of the festive season.

While they shop they'll be lit by a display featuring 220,000 sparkling LEDs.

This year, the decorations are estimated to be 90% more energy-efficient than traditional bulb displays.
