Should Life on Mars Make a Comeback?

‘Life on Mars’ creator Ashley Pharaoh wants to revive the series.

The man behind hit BBC drama ‘Life on Mars’ has revealed that he would love to revive the show… and during an interview with Digital Spy, said he would ‘never say never’.

“It would be hard, I think, just because the end of Ashes to Ashes sort of does wrap up the whole mythology of Gene Hunt,” said Pharaoh.

‘Life on Mars’ wowed TV audiences back in 2006 with the story of DCI Sam Tyler – a modern-day police officer who hit his head during a car accident and seemingly woke up in the 1970s.

‘Ashes to Ashes’ was the hit follow-up to ‘Life on Mars’ starring Keeley Hawes.

“We always thought we were going to do three series of Life on Mars - and then it became two,” said Pharaoh. And it sounds as though there could be a lot of material floating around that never made it to screen.

“I always wanted to do a Christmas special, with Morecambe and Wise and Mud,” he added. “So never say never, I suppose.”

‘Life on Mars’ starred John Simm in the leading role, with Philip Glenister as his brash, loud-mouthed 1970s DCI, Gene Hunt.

And it seems they’d both be on board for another series.

“I’d do [a reunion]. Yeah, you bet,” said Glenister in a recent interview. “John and I were talking about it a while ago and I think he’d be up for it. Maybe to do a Life on Mars movie in some form, if we could find an angle – I think we’d be up for that, for sure.”

But should ‘Life on Mars’ really continue?

At the end of ‘Ashes to Ashes’ viewers were treated to a startling revelation – that Sam Tyler, Gene Hunt, new DI Alex Drake and the rest of the gang were all police officers who had died under violent circumstances, serving their time in purgatory before moving on.

In fact, none of the characters knew this themselves - apart from Gene Hunt.

Acting as a ferrymen for the newly-arriving police officers, Gene heads back to the station to welcome the next batch of officers. And by taking up the role of custodian for all his fallen comrades, it’s easy to see how he could be written into a ‘Life on mars’ revival.

But then… the revelation has already been blown.

There’s no back-tracking this time around. We all know that they’re dead… and that Gene knows this.

If ‘Life on Mars’ does continue, it may find that its creators have simply backed the show into a corner. How they might get out of it, remains to be seen. But it could result in a brand new concept, or a new set of characters.

Either way, it might not be the ‘Life on Mars’ we know and love.
