One viewer tweeted: "Can we take a moment to appreciate the #Strictly costume and makeup department though. INSANE!"
Another fan wrote: "Blimey hair, make-up and costume have OUTDONE themselves tonight on #Strictly. Utterly incredible work!"
Highlights included Sara Davies and Aljaz Skorjanec as Princess Fiona and Shrek, and John Whaite and Johannes Radebe in Pirates of the Caribbean costume.
One viewer commented: "Aljaz giving it FACE as Shrek. Obsessed. Terrified."
Adam Peaty and Katya Jones were also a hit in full blue body paint as Avatar characters, as were Oti Mabuse and Ugo Monye as Moana.
An impressed fan tweeted: "That Avatar makeup is exceptional."
Someone else added: "All the costumes look amazing! My favourite is the avatar looks! Wowwww"
However, Robert Webb and Dianne Buswell as Kermit and Miss Piggy did not go down quite so well.

One viewer tweeted: "The costumes are amazing tonight…but Robert’s Kermit looks like his mum forgot she had to get a costume together and threw it together this afternoon."
Someone else added: "That Kermit outfit is legit just a cycling helmet no?"
More understated looks for the show included AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington inspired by The Bodyguard, and Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice dancing a Titanic routine.

Judge Anton Du Beke told them: "It's funny, I remember dancing with Ann Widdecombe to Titanic on this show a few years ago, and somehow it didn't quite look the same as that."
The Titanic themed routine was one of Du Beke's most famous dances on the show as he acted out saving partner Widdecombe from an iceberg.
